The Brief
A family foundation commissioned a small lakeside retreat to host writers, artists, and small gatherings throughout the year. The site is a quiet lake in southern Sweden, surrounded by Scandinavian pine and birch — protected, isolated, and exceptionally beautiful.
Our Approach
The main building is a long horizontal pavilion in warm light oak and glass, oriented parallel to the lake with one end cantilevered over the water. A separate oak-clad sauna pavilion connects to a wooden dock. Inside, a library room with travertine fireplace and a generous reading table anchors the gathering spaces.
The Outcome
A retreat that disappears into the landscape at distance and feels deeply restorative within. The cantilevered glass volume reflects in the still morning water. Writers describe finishing work they had been stuck on for years. The sauna becomes the closing ritual of every visit.
